Governors Harbour’s New Icon Sign and Ramblings

This past weekend there was a sailing regatta in Governors Harbour and a new sign was unveiled on Cupid’s Cay.

It is a 3D Icon sign with a huge Eleuthera Pineapple as well. It has its own dais and is already the site for many photos of both visitors and locals.

The Eleuthera Pineapple

The sailing regatta went very well I have heard although we only did a drive around while it was going on. There has been a sailing club in Eleuthera for over 20 years and it is great to see young people here enjoying learning to sail , kite board and more. The Eleuthera Sailing Academy – based in Savannah Sound – is run by Martin and Carlien and they do an amazing job on the island. Click HERE to read more about the club.

Lovely to see the boats in the water…..

On Sunday Bob and I went to Sunset Inn for lunch and were delighted when blog reader Yvonne, along with her two friends Carol and Ellie started chatting with us. Of course we recommended the grouper fingers and fries as our favorite thing on the menu as you can see below. As I have said many times before it is a delight when readers introduce themselves and they tell me how much they enjoy the blog. My inconsequential ramblings – as they often are – do strike a note with followers and it makes me feel that at least for now I should carry on rambling !

Carol, Yvonne and Ellie – plus grouper fingers and fries !

Last Friday night we entertained friends for the first time since we moved last July. It has been pretty chaotic so it has taken me a while to feel organized enough to invite people round. There were seven of us , Dan, Larry, Carol and Keith and Keith’s sister also called Carol. Champagne was consumed  along with vegetarian shepherd’s pie – a go-to if there are that many of us.

Bob and I are only just making an appearance in this picture – but you know what we look like anyway ….
Dan had been holding on to this label for a while – the invitation was a long time coming !!

It was lovely evening and we christened The Other Place as an entertaining space in good style. During the evening Carol, Keith’s sister asked me if I knew a hairdresser from Northampton and I did know her ! Not actually from my own days as a hairdresser in there but from the 90’s as a customer. The lady in question was wild character and a very avant-garde stylist. Her name was Joy Agar – not that it will mean anything to anyone reading this – but she has subsequently died and I believe that it is important to say the name of people who have died to keep their memory alive. I had totally forgotten about her but as we started talking I remembered that she had done my hair for a ball Bob and I went to in the early 90’s – and I found the picture of my hairdo. So in memory of dear Joy Agar – gone but not forgotten now ! And the night of that ball was suitably wild as well …. And yes is just my own hair – lots of backcombing as we say in the UK or teasing if you are from the US

That’s how it was back in the early 90’s – wild hair and wild nights !!!!

Reminiscing also took me back to the shop that I used to have in Oxford – also in the 90’s . It was an interior design and fabric shop – a franchise called Material World . Jane, my sister worked for me part time in the shop and also a lovely lady called Frances and did we laugh a lot. It was fun time and I decided to try and track Frances down – miraculously I found her and this week we had a great phone call catching up on the last – nearly 30 years !!

What is the point of all this rambling ? – the point is to say do try and track down people from your distant past – to remember people whether they are dead or alive and to make contact if you can and to speak of them if you are too late.

Bob and I had a great friend called Michael Mac who died some years ago – he knew he was dying and when we visited him back in the UK he said to us please talk about me after I have gone and speak my name. We do often – and remember what a brilliant impression of Bob he used to !

So that’s it dear readers – have a good weekend and I will be back with more inconsequential ramblings next week…..

There has been a pack – not the right word I know – of pelicans in the harbour for a couple of weeks – 10 of them here taking flight…

Sure Wanda – although it is a bit random as I don’t actually follow a recipe !
Take one pack of Beyond Beef and break it up – then cook it slowly over a lowish heat. I then allow this to cool before chopping it a little more finely . It can clump together a bit. Fry a finely chopped good sized onion in butter – that’s my preference – then add a grated parsnip and a large grated carrot. Allow these to cook down very slowly – add a little bit of vegetable stock if it looks a bit dry. Add a good squeeze of mustard – I use Colman’s English mustard but I would wouldn’t I ! Add a few slugs of Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to taste. Dice a pack of mushrooms and fy them in butter with salt and pepper. bring the Beyond Beef into the mix – add the fried mushrooms and taste – season more if needed. Add a small amount of vegetable stock and a thickening agent of your choice – could be flour or cornstarch – I use Bisto granules – another British staple. Simmer for about 45 minutes on a low heat. When you are ready put it into a suitably sized oven proof dish and cover with mashed potatoes. I always add some horseradish sauce along with butter and cream to my mash to give it a bit of flavor. Then heat in the oven until the potatoes just start to brown and serve. This will serve 4 – 6 people depending on appetites ! Personally I like to cook the non meat part the day before and keep it overnight in the fridge. The flavor develops really well this way ! I have been known to serve de-constructed shepherds pie which just means I cook the mashed potatoes at the last minute and serve that in a dish separately. Hope this works for you …..

  3. Dear Kathy,
just wanted to note that I am a diligent reader of your blog since our visit in Peach House many years ago. Every week I do enjoy reading your “rambling” very much. Reading it always brings me back a little bit to your beautiful island. We are working on coming back to Eleuthera some time.
    Warm greetings from Karlsruhe, Germany
    Sonja

  4. Ramble on Kathy❣️Always interesting!

Your philosophy of reaching out to friends / acquaintances from the past and of speaking the names of those who have entered another dimension of our universe is heartwarming, at once inspired and inspiring. Thank you for these sweet nudges to the soul.

    And uh…Fab 90’s look!
