Hello dear readers – here we are meandering into May in Eleuthera.

The weather has been very rainy – which is always welcome unless you are trying to get outside painting done ! But on we go and there are plenty of other jobs that the painters can get on with.

We have also had some very long power outages – nearly 24 hours over the weekend. Word is the new generators were being installed that would put paid to a lot of the power problems – but no sign of that yet. Let’s hope that it is a few blips on the path to a more reliable service.

This is the bit where my stomach does a flip !!
And gently lowering into place….

So as I told you the generator for The Jewel has now been craned into place and we are just waiting for it to be connected up. The countertops are complete – so pleased, as we always are, with how Danny our countertop guru makes it all look. The cooktop with the downdraft extractor is in place on the kitchen island as is the pop-up electrical outlet.

Looking a little bare right now….. but watch this space.
Island with the pop-up outlet
And popped down ….

The mirrors have been ordered from Nassau Glass so they will be here next Tuesday – there is a piece for the kitchen as well as the laundry room and the hair and make-up station in the bedroom. I have also ordered glass tops for the nightstands in the master suite – much easier than messing about with coasters.

Most of the art work is now up and that makes a huge difference to creating that feeling of home.

Love having this artwork here.

The new mattress arrived from the US and is on the bed and frankly I cannot wait to start sleeping on it ! So books to unpack and more shelves needed but we are getting there…..

We enjoyed a great lunch at Potlatch on Sunday – so much so that we decided to have a meal there one evening this week with good friends Aiden and Keith.

The picture at the top is Bob’s grouper fingers and sweet potato fries. My gambas pictured below

We were told that there was a Pad Thai special on the menu so that’s what three of us ate with Bob having blackened grouper.

i do love a good pad thai

I had a couple of spoonfuls of a desert that Bob and Keith both had – I can’t remember what it was called but it was topped with a beautiful pineapple dressing – the whole thing was absolutely delicious. Aiden had creme brûlée which you cannot go wrong with in my book – a really beautifully executed meal all round. We are so lucky to have this place right here in Governors Harbour – it is a delight to go there and enjoy the luxurious surroundings.

This is the un-named desert – very tasty and not over sweet….
The obligatory people shot !

While we were there we saw Cathy and Galen enjoying a meal with their friend Gene. We wish them good luck on their new adventure in Florida – they have sold their house here after 30 years in the Bahamas . You will be missed but we hope that you enjoy the new life you will be creating in the land of plenty.

I am feeling very much better after the hideous virus I caught and I thank you all who sent good wishes to me for a good recovery. Getting strong and healthy again for the upcoming surgery to my other eye on May 18th.

Before I finish I just want to tell you about a great new App I have on my phone. It is called Merlin Bird ID – and you can record and it will identify the bird song that you hear. I absolutely love it ! I have taken it out first thing in the morning – about 6.30am – when I walk Rudge and have so far identified two types of Vireo, a mourning dove and there was something else which I have forgotten for now – and I forgot to press save on it ! Anyway I highly recommend it – get listening too! And many thanks to my sister Jane who was the one who told me about it…..

So that’s it for this week. I hope that you all have a great weekend – whether that may be a peaceful one or a raucous one depending on what you have planned. Take care and look after yourselves…….

Pictures in the bedroom

And now the beach shot – not one in the Bahamas – my sister Jane took this the other week on a trip to the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. This is Rhossili beach – it is 3 miles long and we spent pretty much every summer holiday in this area when we were kids. It is still as spectacular as I remember it…. Thanks Jane for the picture

  1. I love the Merlin app. Used it when I visited and identified the Smooth-billed Ani and the Black Billed Plover. For plants, you might want to try the Seek app if you don’t already have it. I enjoy identifying the “new to me” plants on Eleuthera and learning about them.

Thanks for this Dee – around where we are living we mainly have varieties of vireo – which I admit I have never heard of before. The plants app sounds very good. I can see it becoming a bit of an obsession wherever I go !

  2. Hi Kathy. We are getting ready to paint the outside of our house in Eleuthera. Would you mind sharing the name and contact info for your painter? Thanks!

Hi Kathy. Another app that I love in addition to Merlin is called PictureThis. It’s a plant identification app, you photograph a plant and the app tells you what it is, whether it’s healthy, and how to care for it. I have loved using it in Eleuthera because I don’t know what many of the native plants are! I enjoy your posts, and as a retired builder especially appreciate the building project photos.

  4. I was Just wondering why you didn’t install solar panels with batteries instead of a generator ?
I did my house in Governors harbor and it runs my entire home and the batteries have never gone below 75% with both ac units running 24/7 . We are not hooked up to the grid.

    1. kathy@kathycolman.com

We did consider solar but my main worry is is a hurricane – how to hang on to them ???? Being off the grid is a real bonus I’m sure.

    2. Who did you use for solar? You can also hook up your generator as backup to solar. We’re trying to find a skilled, available technician to do that for us.We’re with BPL as backup which isn’t reliable

      1. kathy@kathycolman.com

Well we don’t actually have solar ourselves but I hear a lot of good things about Mark McCloskey – I will look up his number ….

    Hi Kathy

We love using Merlin round the world too. I recorded this for you on Merlin on the Cornish coastal path near home in Portreath on the day I read your blog. Hope it reminds you of here.

    Hope the audio file arrives.

This site stripped the file away so I’ve emailed it to you. It is of 3 birds – Eurasian Wren, Meadow Piout and Eurasian Skylark.
