This week I am introducing you to the NB Farm – just north of Governors Harbour. NB stands for Naturally Bahamian . Some of you will already be aware of the farm, it is just before Lord Byron’s on the same side of the road. There is no sign for it so it is a game to find it. In fact it is the driveway before Horizon House – which does have a sign ! So if you see that then you have gone too far …..
They are generally open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday morning form 8.30 until 10 am. I have to thank a couple of people for pointing out that it would be a good place to feature on the blog. Firstly Angelika Bacchus from Bacchus Fine Foods told me about it last year – I visited it but didn’t know the opening times so there was nobody there ! Then I sort of forgot about it until Monique Carroll recommended it. Monique is our yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner and a great source of what is good to buy and eat on the island. She sent me the opening times and a list of what they have available each week so I was inspired to visit.

It is a true family business headed up by Denise Worrell, her husband Paul and their son Michael who really is the farm manager. Paul walked me around the area where they grow a lot of the produce hydroponically – they have clearly invested a good amount of money in the farm and it was heartening to hear that they supply both restaurants and hotels on the island with their beautiful fresh produce.

They also have plenty of stuff growing in ground which I caught a glimpse of. They farm without any insecticides and do a lot of companion planting – nasturtiums and marigolds both work well to keep the bugs away.

They have a great range of fresh herbs including Jamaican mint, orange thyme, lemon balm, rosemary, basil, parsley, cilantro , chives and more. Celery, kale, arugula, sweet potatoes, broccoli, bok choi, bunching onions, swiss chard , mixed greens are on offer this week.

They have lots of pineapples which will come into season in May and June , pomegranates , papayas and they also have a fantastic selection of herbal teas as well.
Phew – the list is extensive – take a look at their website – naturallybahamian.com to see how comprehensive their offer is.
They are lovely people who have invested both time and money into a great enterprise and we wish them continued success.
Mid week Bob and I went for an early supper to The Buccaneer. We both had our favorites – Bob’s is sweet and sour chicken with sweet potato fries and mine is the Island curry with shrimp – no green peppers thank you ! You either love them or hate them – right – and I don’t love them !

The new covered pavilion at the side is our favored dining spot and it has added a lot more seating – the new ceiling lights are up and it look great ….

As I have written about before the shop opposite the Buccaneer is called Chatty Cathy’s Everyday and here’s a heads up – they have a sale on right now. Not sure of the details of how long it is going on for or what is in the sale but it’s up to you to go in and find out ….
The weather here is still pretty cool – not as bad as it has been but definitely a longer and colder spell than we are used to.
Work in The Jewel is progressing well – we are concentrating on the master suite at the moment. The tiles are being laid in the shower room and the oak flooring is going down in the bedroom. I LOVE it ! It is a beautiful light color and the boards are wider than we had before – I can’t stop going down there to admire it ……

Anyway dear friends this Saturday is Valentine’s Day. It is also my nephew’s birthday as well. Just remember that Valentines Day is a commercially driven celebration. If you are single or heartbroken it can be a miserable time – but reclaim it and make it a day where you celebrate love in all its myriad forms and especially love for yourself. Make it your own in whatever way suits you . I will be going to yoga on Saturday morning and Monique always makes a special effort to tie in our practice to whatever is going on. So she will be focusing on the heart chakra – I will report back how it all went !
Have a good weekend and I will see you all next week. It was lovely to be greeted by a couple of blog readers at the Island Farm on Tuesday this week when I was collecting my bi-weekly bread order. Such a treat for me to meet you lovely readers…..
