At last we are in February after what seemed like many, many weeks of January – at least 65 days anyway.

Continuing my theme of last week’s shopping trials and tribulations I want to concentrate on dear Bacchus Fine Foods. So handy for us here in Governors Harbour. As you all should know it is a great spot for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday – my particular favorite is the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. And then Monday is pizza night and Thursday is sushi night. Both are now well established and draw a great crowd of regulars as well as visitors.

The shop is great for fresh bread – baguettes, sourdough , multigrain and muesli loaves are available everyday apart from Saturday and Sunday when the kitchen is closed. There are some great cheeses and a very good selection of cold cuts. I buy the packs of prosciutto and sometimes use it in sandwiches but also I love to tear it up and pan fry it then use on the top of either salads or pasta dishes.

In the freezer there is the Beyond Beef mince that I use for vegetarian shepherd’s pie as well as fish and a good range of vegetarian things.

The wine they sell is very good quality and there is also my favorite pink champagne !! Perfect for special occasions…. The shop is not necessarily stocked with large amounts of general groceries – but it is the perfect spot for delicious special treats, including the range of cakes in the cooler – Bob particularly loves the baklava.

So while you are doing your rounds for shopping make a point of looking in and treating yourselves to something that you cannot find anywhere else on the island.

Last week we went for great supper to Dan and Larry’s house on Cupid’s Cay. There were 6 of us in total – Dan , Larry, Bob and me, and Katie and Cathy. It was great to meet Cathy properly for the first time and lovely to really catch up with Katie who we haven’t spoken to apart from in passing for years.

Cathy brought a home cooked artichoke dip , then we really enjoyed a beautifully tasty clam chowder cooked by Larry. Dan had made a delicious salad topped with toasted noodles – which I love served with a great tortellini . Desert was a sticky ginger cake with warm pineapple and ice cream. I didn’t manage to finish my desert as I had seconds of salad and tortellini – all in all a great evening.

Sunday lunch time we went to The Potlatch Club for a delicious lunch. We sat outside for the first time and I must say that the outside chairs are very comfortable. They are nicely wide and have very comfortable upholstered cushions – I am very aware of how comfortable or not chairs are on Bob’s behalf. If the backs are too high he can only sit for a short time in them. And if they don’t have comfortable upholstery or cushions then the same applies. These are really very comfortable so it was very pleasant to be able to relax in a leisurely way for a long lunch.

Seared sesame tuna salad with avocado

The food was great – we shared the sesame seed tuna salad and a special sushi – tempura lobster roll. Absolutely fabulous and so pretty to look at as you can see……. There are ribbons of fresh mango on the top of the sushi – the green circle is pea puree with a splash of beetroot hummus in the centre and then the other one is beetroot hummus with pea puree in the centre – lovely touches of detail ….

This was extremely good….

Sunday evening we had a champagne and caviar evening with Molly and Polly who live on the uphill here in GH. They brought the caviar and all the accoutrements for it and we supplied the champagne. All in all a bit of gourmet day for us.

I have really enjoyed meeting up with some of our former renters this week,  Bill and  Brandy , and then Lori , Joe and their son Dominic. It gladdens my heart that we see people coming back here , and often still staying in the properties that made up Governors Estate. They tell me of the great memories that they have made here and to have been a part of that is a great legacy for me…..

And so dear friends that’s it for this week , do take care of yourselves and find those small things every day that lift your heart.

Dan had this fabulous cruet set on the table – I do Love Lucy !

  1. Thank you Kathy for the wonderful blogs you work so hard to put together and the happy memories. I miss dinner at Dan and Larry’s so very much. And the pleasure of their generous fun company. Happy Valentines Day and love to you and Bob.
