This week is a look at August in Eleuthera and what that means……

Well it is very hot and at times pretty thundery as well. We are getting some rain which is good news as it lays the dust, fills up the cisterns and most importantly cools the ocean . This helps to keep the bad storms and hurricanes away. – well we hope and pray it does anyway . It is important to keep a sense of balance about it all – storms and hurricanes are the price we pay for living in this beautiful place.

The sun going down on Cupid’s Cay

It was my birthday last Saturday and dear Dan and Larry cooked a lovely meal in their house on Cupid’s Cay to celebrate. Alex and Adrian were also there and we had a really lovely relaxed fun evening.

A happy birthday gathering

The food was delicious – Dan had roasted some chicken thighs and served them on top of mushroom tortellini. Oooh it was so good. The chicken had a scrumptious crispy skin and was juicy and tender underneath. It fell off the bone – absolutely perfect. Dan baked a lovely lemony tart with a candle in it for desert / birthday cake and that too was delicious. As I am always saying – I don’t really have a sweet tooth – but this served with rhubarb and cream was something that really hit the spot !

Wonderful treat …..

Birthdays are much more low key these days – in fact it is hard to remember many of them from one year to the next ! I do remember my 60th birthday here in Eleuthera when Bob gave me 60 red roses !!!! How about that for a wonderful present.

Goodness – 11 years ago – so much has happened since then.

Much further back I remember my 5th birthday for slightly less pleasant reasons. We were staying with my Mum’s parents in London and my treat was a day out at London Zoo. They had asked me what I wanted for breakfast – egg and bacon. All lovely until I saw a fatty gristly bit in the bacon and carefully cut round it. However I was told that until my plate was clear – no trip to the zoo. So I took it in my mouth and kept it there until we reached the zoo where I surreptitiously spat it into a rubbish bin at my first opportunity !  Crafty or what ? Anyway that is the birthday recollection that stands out in my mind apart from the roses ……

Do please keep Dan’s dear sister Kathy in your hearts and prayers as she is currently in Rhode Island having some horrible health issues. If Ramie reads this out to you Kathy – we are sending love and gentle embracing hugs to you. To know that people are thinking of you when you are suffering and having a horrible time is a small comfort I hope xxxx

I made a trip down to Rock Sound to the Market Place at the beginning of the week and found some great fruit and vegetables. Fresh raspberries, asparagus, green beans, mint, cilantro, mandarin oranges – what a treat. They have a delivery which goes out on the shelves usually on Saturday – so a trip on a Monday reaps plenty of lovely rewards.

Okay dear readers – that’s all for this week. Keep an ear open for all those around us suffering ill-health and hold them in your hearts……  There are many people having a difficult time at the moment so as usual I say be kind wherever you see an opportunity.

  2. Scrumptous food. Good company. If there’s anything one should cherish and retain if all else fails, it’s great memories! Stunning shots Kathy! Is that a wee penguin on the beach? Your childhood food story? Here’s one at you: my mom served liver every now and again. I hated it. I’d chew it and then as l bent down to pet my basset hound Morgan, l’d spit it out and he’d lap it up! Thank goddesses for dogs.

  3. Happy belated birthday Kathy !!! I know you got a great one again and you deserve all of it 🙂 ❤️❤️❤️
