This week dear readers I talk about the terrible pot holes riddling our roads and other matters.
The Queens Highway is a bit of a nightmare at the moment so if you are coming on to the island and getting a rental car then please be ahttps://bestofeleuthera.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=imagifyware that the main road from the north to the south is absolutely peppered with stretches of enormous pot holes. The main problem is that some areas have been patched but others – with no warning – are very dangerous. Cars are swerving to avoid them and frankly it is extremely dangerous never mind the damage it is doing to island vehicles….
The holes are being patched but it is pretty random and great care and slow speeds are what is called for. It is bad enough during the day but at night it is even worse…..
We drove up to The Cove for lunch on Sunday so we really experienced how horrible it is. Do take great care if you are driving here – it is a minefield.
So lunch at the Cove was very welcome – they closed for 6 weeks which is one of the shortest periods that anywhere closes for the off season – and we are very grateful ! Bob had his favorite kobe burger with sweet potato fries and I had a specially prepared tuna sushi roll – Joel – the sushi chef knows that I really like traditional sushi – no additional hot sauce or cream cheese . And I also had my favorite salad as well. Delicious and very welcome to have something different.

I was told the other day that 1648 at French Leave Resort reopens on October 27th – next week !
The new marina in Governors Harbour is really starting to take shape now. I will keep you informed with pictures as to how it is coming along. Â I believe that it will be a very welcome development for the town – and indeed the island. Many people are averse to change – but these things are inevitable so let’s look for the benefits of it – it will bring in more people with boats who will be spending money here by supporting local businesses .

Work is coming on at both of our houses at Wykee. The Other Place should be ready – fingers crossed – for us to move in to by the end of next week. Countertops are being fitted in the kitchen on Friday this week and the plumbers are busy connecting all the bathrooms up as well. The washer and dryer are in situ in the laundry room – the main thing left now is painting – with the floors being painted as well. It will be a close thing but fingers crossed that everything arrives on the boat that we are expecting …..
Boot has been ‘on the tools ‘ as we say in the UK. He is usually running around fetching supplies that the workers need – but this week he has been working on the master suite extension for The Jewel . This is the house that we will live in eventually so it is extra special for us. Â He has been doing a great job and is wonderful at motivating the other workers. It is great to see this side of him – he has kept it hidden for too long ! The Jewel will be a 2 bedroom house has well – at the moment it is just one. Both will have ensuite bathrooms and plenty of closet space. It is very exciting to see it taking shape and it gives me something to think about in the small hours when I can’t sleep ….

That’s all for this week dear friends. I hope that life is treating you as well as possible – be kind wherever you can – it is the small stuff that makes life good…..

Thank you for the update on the road. I remembering the speed bumps being the big fear for us. If I’m lucky enough to ever return to your lovely island I will be driving very slowly.
As always your choice of food looks delicious and fresh.
Good luck with your season. Wish it was me coming for a few weeks.
Until then

Thank you Susananne – lovely to hear from you – I hope you will be back one day …..

100% Agreed.
So pleased you agree ! Hope that you are both well….. Lovely to hear from you
looks like you are right on the beach?
No Penelope we are not right on the beach. But as Eleuthera is only a mile wide in places – nobody is far from the beach…..
Are the potholes part of the charm? 🙂 I got use to them after visiting many times…I think its slows people down….
You are right -it can be part of the charm but the swerving is very dangerous. It is a lesson for sure that we all need to slow down a bit – in all sorts of ways ….. Thank you
It is not charming to break a strut due to potholes( memories of Vermont dirt roads).Living here means the mechanic doesn’t usually have the part which then needs to be ordered in Florida, shipped over…You pray your car holds up until the part arrives!
I pray the paving of Queens Highway gets finished
You are so right Lynn – the reality is pretty awful……
Potholes. OMG. Who from Canada would have imagined that situation in beautiful weather Eleuthera? Our roads take such a beating from freeze-thaw. Combined with heavy truck traffic, no sooner repaired that the cycle starts over, but at least there is some retrieve for our axels for a while. Sorry to hear that we do not have a monopoly on potholes. I remember one guy telling an ex-mayor that he had no money to support his campaign for re-election because of all the money that he spent repairing his car from pothole damage! Wishing Eleuthera swift and good pothole repairs.
And that lunch was mouthwatering for sure!
Allo the best Kathy and Bob, Linda and Peter
Lovely to hear from you – sounds like potholes are a universal problem !
