Book club and food news in Governors Harbour

This week news of a book club and an exciting food update in Governors Harbour. Here we are in the first week of October ( already ! ) and it is good to have a couple of things to report to you.

I did write last week about poor Bob coming down with flu while we were away – he really did get it badly and has only just really started on the road to recovery. I came down with it at the end of last week but fortunately for me I have had a milder version. Even so it is awful to feel so under the weather. Added to that it was Bob’s birthday last Sunday and we did absolutely nothing to celebrate it – that has been put off until we both feel back up to thinking about what we might do as a belated affair……

Anyway – being back at home was a great tonic – nothing worse than feeling ill with no home comforts…….

A stunning day in the Harbour …..

Right – now on to news of a new book club here in Governors Harbour. Here below is their very own newsletter – see what you think . As you all know Bob and I are great readers so to have a new initiative like this on island is a really good thing. Well done to Anya Ferguson and Tempess Johnson for starting this up – they are both avid readers and saw the opportunity for women to get together and talk about the issues raised in a book and then find the value in sharing all sorts of personal experiences…..

I also want to tell you about the food news I referred to in the title above. Some of you already know that Burrows Food Store is being sold to the group from Nassau that runs the Solomon’s Food Stores – the group is acquiring existing food stores on various Family Islands. The deal is due to complete at the very end of 2024 – the store will be closed for 2 months for refitting etc and then will open to a great selection of foods ! I hadn’t written anything about this previously because I suppose I thought it may jinx it – but the word is out now and it has been written about in the Nassau press and it was mentioned in the comments of last week’s blog. So plenty to look forward to in the New Year – which shockingly is not that far off !

Xena – one of Dan’s dogs having a great time with her bumper on French Leave Beach

Take care of yourselves and try to avoid the horrible cold / flu doing the rounds …..

Amazing sunrise the other day…..
And another shot on a beautifully calm day in the Harbour

  1. Hi Kathy , thank you for this most recent Blog. Definitely appreciate it knowing that you and your husband are recovering and probably feeling not so energetic . Wishing you both a speedy recovery. Also very cool to read about the start of Celestial Celebration Book Club. I see in the upcoming event they have posted their next book to read. I’ll check it out too. Too bad I cannot make the next club Meeting, maybe down the road they will host virtual meet ups too.
    Thank you again Wendy

Lovely to hear from you Wendy – we are on the road to recovery – but our days of bouncing back quickly from any ailments seem to have gone by the board ! Patience and looking after ourselves is the order of the day now …. Great news about the new book club isn’t it.

No we didn’t test – doesn’t seem too much point now – and we are both on the road to recovery so we are very thankful for that.

  2. XENA is so honored to be prominently featured in THE BLOG with her beloved bumper/frisbee! Living up to her full name: XENA, Coconut WarriorPrincess!
The book club is a real revelation! Loved that book….if they don’t add men, maybe some brave soul will start a book club for men….?

      1. OMG Your Dan Man’s Book Club can submit nominees for the Man Booker Prize.

Hey, a South Korean woman got Nobel Prize today. Han Kang. Her “The Vegetarian” is now on my reading list…but not yet in my diet. LOL Wish I was in Eleuthera to join the ladies reading club! Read on!

        Stay well you 2.

Thank you for this ! I will take a look at the book – always welcome when I get a new recommendation……

  3. As usual we enjoy reading your blog. Thank you for all the news. We will be in Eleuthera in a couple of weeks. Should we expect Burrows to be closed?

  4. Glad to hear you are both recovering! There’s so much going around right now. If the book club will allow temporary members, I’d love to participate next winter- spring when we’re living on island! 🙂

  5. Hi kathy
Just wanted to drop a note to you about how much I enjoy your blogging! Haven’t returned to Eluethra for our third trip yet but the desire never leaves. Life is interesting and ever changing while moving forward. We are now retired and moving to Michigan soon. Once we get settled (we’re building a barndo in Traverse City) we hope to return.
Keep up the excellent work and wish you and Bob all our best.

Lovely to hear from you …. Good luck with your move and setting up your new home – not always easy !

  6. Hi Kathy, I enjoy reading your blog – so fun! Eleuthera is our favorite island. We’re hoping we can come back in the next year or two. We have so many fond memories of your Mom and Theo and you and Bob! Hope you and Bob are on the mend. Stay well.
