News this week of getting our generator going again – thank goodness ! We really rely on having it working as many of you will know that BPL often cut the power during the summer months because the demand is so high…..

I thought that it had run out of fuel because the other day there was a power cut and no generator kicked in. So I had diesel delivered and then got on a video call to Jack Adderley in Nassau who talks me through what I have to do to get it started again. No luck !! but he said that he thought it was a battery problem. So I called Cecil who works for us – otherwise known as Boot – and he came to the rescue. Checked the one battery and it was no good and needed replacing. He did that the next morning – another video call tutorial with Jack and away we went – started up like a dream ! There is something so satisfying about having a hand in getting it going again so I felt pretty pleased with myself – and Cecil …..

If anyone is thinking of having a generator I cannot recommend Jack Adderley highly enough. 2  friends have used him and are also very satisfied with him. Although he lives in Nassau he comes over to Eleuthera fairly regularly – we have our baby serviced twice a year and couldn’t be happier. He recommends the size of generator that you need and puts you in touch with a supplier in Miami who then gets everything shipped over. Then when it is all here Jack comes with his team to install it and set it all up. Just message me if you want his contact details.

On Friday evening we have a lovely evening at home with our good friend Amanda and her 21year old daughter Lauren. We met Amanda very soon after we moved her – so probably 19 years ago – Lauren was just a toddler !! How fast the years  go by eh ? Anyway we caught up on what is happening in Lauren’s life and generally had a lovely relaxed evening – so relaxed in fact that I forgot to take any pictures at all. I made two different quiches,- blue cheese and broccoli as usual then a fried onion, cheese and sun dried tomato ,  a healthy salad and a big bowl of baby potatoes – very simple but tasty. I have waxed lyrical before about the pastry cases that Burrows food market sell – they make sure that cooking a quiche is extremely easy.

And another spectacular sunrise ……

By the way – The Island Farm is closing this Saturday – just so you know. A well earned break for them as it has been a very busy season and getting up at 3am to bake bread twice a week must take it out of you – I know that’s not something that I will ever be doing – baking my own bread I mean. I did it once and to be honest it was like a house brick !

Never tried this champagne before – Moet Ice Imperial. Pour in a glass and add ice – it was good and a bit different. Fun to share….

Earlier this week we had a pizza party at Sprawling Towers with Dan and Larry and their friend Tracey – down from Hartford where they used to live. We had a lovely evening – pizzas courtesy of Tippy’s – anchovy, capers and olives – our favorite of course. I had been working all day and was pretty tired so the plan of having takeout was ideal. Tracey brought a delicious smoked fish dip she had made and desert was – as ever – cookies and ice cream !!!

From left to right – Larry, Dan and Tracey …..

It was a great evening – Tracey had some really good stories of life as a policewoman among other things ! She is a born storyteller and was huge fun. Looking forward to her next visit for more tales of the unexpected ….

And so dear friends that’s it for another week – next week’s blog will be in September – how fast has this year gone – or is it just me ?

Thank you for all the birthday wishes – much appreciated.

Take care of yourselves and find someone like Tracey who can make you laugh out loud when you need it ….

I always love reading your blog! FYI we are keeping a boat in Lauderdale now for the purpose of cruising the Bahamian Islands. We will catch you and Bob on a trip over to Eleuthera soon – after storm season.

How lovely to hear from you Sylvia – and we both look forward to meeting up with when you are around here.

  2. Greetings from Bogota, Colombia! Reading about your happenings on the island is a lovely escape from the chaos of the city. Now to gather the ingredients for a quiche. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Thanks for the introduction to Moët Ice Imperial! It’s $66 a bottle in our local supermarket in the US which makes me wonder where on earth did you buy it on Eleuthera and I shudder to think what you would pay for it over there on our favorite island!

      1. Hi All, Sorry I got it wrong. the Moet et Chandon ICE is not at Bristol Wines and Spirits in Governor’s, it’s at Jummy’s at North Eleuthera Airport store. My apologies.

  4. I so enjoy reading your blogs over the years. My husband and I have been traveling to Eleuthera for a few years now, and we are finally about to close on a lot in Ten Bay. We first stayed at your properties in GH and you were such a sweet person. Thank you for the referral for the generator installer since I know we will be needing one when we build!

  5. ALWAYS a Treat hearing from our Eleuthera Friends and about Life on our Favorite Vacation Spot! Thanks for Sharing your Lives with Ours.

  6. Tuesday night spent at Sprawling Towers with Kathy, Bob, Dan and Larry was a fun evening. I appreciate your kind words Kathy. The Moet Ice Imperial was a wonderful experience with the three ice cubes! Who knew champagne would be more delicious with ICE CUBES? And the pizza with anchovies, capers and olives was DEELISH. Thank you again for your gracious hospitality so I say “onwards and upwards, like a champagne bubble”. Cheers!

Lovely to hear from you Tracey – it was a thoroughly good evening all round ! looking forward to doing it again soon…..

  7. You should do a blog on the need for a generator! BPL is a very poorly run company. No customer service, power outages and, even worse, brown outs happen so often, we residents, have come to expect them. I feel sorry for visitors that pay large amounts of money on rentals, only to be faced with constant power cuts. I’ve come to the conclusion that a generator is mandatory for a rental unit or small or large business on the island. Also, the low voltage (ours runs between 94 – 105) is VERY bad for all appliances. I’ve had to replace two TVs a microwave oven and a washer.
    Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks for this Ray – it is true – all that you say is correct. Plus it is extremely expensive. A lot of the more expensive rentals do have a generator – it does help sell their rentals. BPL do leave a lot to be desired…….
