Honor for Bob and the End of an Era at Burrows

This week I tell you about an honor award for Bob and the end of an era at Burrows.

Last Friday we were invited to the Christmas party and award ceremony for Bahamas Wellness Center held at the Cancer Society building in Palmetto Point. I already knew that Bob was going to be given an award but of course I was sworn to secrecy ! The Foundational Award was presented to Bob by Dr Arlington Lightbourn and it was a complete surprise to Bob. It was awarded –

” In heartfelt recognition of  your unwavering support, dedication and commitment to Bahamas Wellness from its very inception. Your steadfast contributions have been instrumental in shaping our journey and success ”

I was very proud of Bob and loved that his determination to making sure this venture succeeded was publicly recognized. He made a lovely acceptance speech – brief but humorous as is his way and then seemed in shock for most of the rest of the night …. We enjoyed a delicious multi course meal and had a lovely evening. Also receiving awards were Jackie Gibson, Michele Johnson and Diane Philips from Nassau. Diane has done as huge amount to ensure the continuing success of Bahamas Wellness and is a wonderful philanthropic person. We were sitting at the same table and had a lovely time with them.

There were plenty of awards given to various members of staff at BW and everybody was in a real state of gratitude and thankfulness for such excellence here in Eleuthera. It was a lovely start to the Christmas holidays ……

And now to the end of an era with the closing of Burrows Foodmarket. The official closing day is Monday 30th December but I doubt that there will be anything left to sell – given the bareness of the shelves yesterday ! It will mean a new path for Susan and her husband Teddy who runs the liquor store adjoining the foodstore – and a very well deserved retirement for Kathy Burrows. They have had the store for over 20 years – it was here when we first moved to Eleuthera – and prior to the current location they were already trading in different premises.

We all say a huge thank you for the service they have provided for all those years and wish them well in the future.

I hope that you all enjoyed the holiday in your own way – whether that was a quiet contemplative time or with a group of friends and family. It was a quiet time at Sprawling Towers – we enjoyed a lunch at The Potlatch Club and it was a delight to be there. The staff are so kind and attentive and made sure our meal was very enjoyable.

Lucy knocked a glass of water all over Bob – unfortunate or what ?
Choki – the head chef with Bob
Kezang – the general manager and Choki

On Boxing Night we went down to Cupid’s Cay to a bonfire party that Dan and Larry threw. Everybody bought a contribution to a potluck supper which was a real success. Catching up with people that we hadn’t seen for a while as well as people we had only recently seen was a joy – a good time was had by all !

A few familiar faces !

And so dear friends I wish you all a Happy New Year – let’s hope that it brings some joy, and the courage we all need to face the inevitable blips and glitches that get thrown at us from time to time.

I thank you all for your loyalty in regularly reading my weekly musings and hope that we will all continue  with the unfolding story of life in Eleuthera !

All enjoying a lovely evening on Cupid’s Cay
This was dinner at Sprawling Towers before Christmas. Harrod’s Christmas crackers courtesy of good friends Justin and Lindy Tipler – they went down a storm and everyone wore their hat . This is a very English tradition to have Christmas crackers…. Chris, Liz and Carolyn all modeling their hats !

  3. Hi Kathy . My sister Susan and I were sad to hear about the closure of Burrows Foodstore in GH . When we rented Bird Point House now Pineapple Fields in July 1969 Kathy’s mother in law cooked for us and was so kind and helpful as has Kathy Burrows been over our past 17 years in Eleuthera . We will miss her presence and fun chats behind the desk and wish her a very happy retirement ..
