Flights to Eleuthera and other stories…..

This week news of flights to Eleuthera and other stories….

Many of you will have heard of the demise of Silver Airways . They have ceased all flights now – not just to the Bahamas but to all of the 28 destinations they once served. They had become very erratic – for quite some time now – and now they are no more unfortunately. For all the employees it must be a bitter pill…..

We saw this very swish boat going by when we were having lunch on Sunday at Sunset Inn – it was later moored up outside French Leave Resort…..

However nothing stays the same and everything is a cycle. News this week is that Bahamas Air is starting flights 3 times a week from North Eleuthera Airport – ELH – directly onto Fort Lauderdale. This is a great addition – not having to go through Nassau should save both time and money. Of course if you live in central or south Eleuthera there is the cost of a taxi – or the help of a good friend to drive you there, but a direct flight is a great idea and I am sure it will prove very popular. I don’t know any details of either when these flights are starting or which days they will be operating but I’m pretty sure that these details will be published soon…..

In other flight news I have heard that American Airlines are going to be flying possibly every day from Governors Harbour into Miami. This is a great and short flight on a lovely plane and I am certain that this will prove to be extremely popular. I don’t think that this will start before early November – the season is winding down in the eyes of the airlines – their current 3 times a week flight into GHB will cease come August and recommence as I said in early November. The American Airlines website should show what is available for later in the year soon.

Let’s hope that all of this comes to fruition. It could make travel to the island easier and that’s something that we are all looking forward to.

The last of this season’s tomatoes – soon to be moon blushed !

The weather is getting very hot now as is to be expected – I was gifted 3 delicious looking pineapples this week ….. I have been told that this is not a great year for pineapples so we have to make the most of what is around. There is nothing like the taste of a sweet creamy Eleuthera pineapple – I still remember the first one I tasted 21 years ago – it was such a delightful shock !

Very much looking forward to these ….

I have harvested the last of my incredible baby tomatoes – it has been another year of bounty with them. I am going to make moon blush tomatoes with them as I can’t get through them all quickly enough and I want to be able to enjoy them for a while yet.

To make moonblush tomatoes – as described by the fabulous Nigella Lawson you prepare them by making sure that they are clean and dry, place them on a large baking sheet. Sprinkle them with salt, pepper, a little dried herb mix, a sprinkle of sugar – actually I never do that ! – and then drizzle with a little olive oil. Have your oven at maximum temperature and then pop them in and turn the oven off. Leave them overnight and hey presto – in the morning take them out and store them in a jar with some oil to cover them. They are delicious and work well either in salads or in a cooked dish that would call for sun dried tomatoes. Thanks again Nigella !

This is a fabulous olive boule loaf baked my friend Shannon as a cheer up treat because of missing Jane. How incredibly kind and thoughtful. And it went fantastically well with the last of the caponata I had made. What a lovely friend – thank you Shannon x

Okay dear friends that’s it for this week apart from saying hello to Jeff and Debbie who Bob and I met when we were walking Rudge and Brian on Sunday. As you know I love it when readers of the blog introduce themselves and give me a little background information about themselves – welcome to Eleuthera Jeff and Debbie!

Have a good weekend and enjoy whatever of nature’s bounty is around you……

Saw these sea grapes at Sunset Inn

And finally a shot of the rising strawberry moon last week…

  1. It is a much needed “lift up your spirit” when I read your blog . Yes Eleuthera is a special place and I am one of the lucky one to be there each winter for 5 months with the added pleasure of having friends like both of you.
Reading the blog gives me courage to overcome all the pain I am experiencing after a complete left knee replacement = very painful at times .
This gives me a beautiful window on what I’ll return to in the end of Nov .
Give my love to Bob .
You are a real positive inspiration to many .
With much love from Claire and Paul .

How lovely to hear from you Paul and so happy that the news may lift your spirits ! My friend in Dubai had a knee replacement last December and was absolutely horrified how much pain there was and how long it took her to get over it – but 6 months on it all good for her. Looking forward to seeing you in November. Take it easy and be kind to yourself – and of course love to both you and Claire xx

    Hi Kathy
Great article this week. Always enjoy your stories. It keeps my wife Liza and I very much connected. Great to hear about the airline news with the exception of Silver. We can’t wait to be back in our home. This year we will be there in Dec/Jan for 4 weeks, our first Christmas there. Our stays are getting longer and our time away shorter . However, thanks to your news from “ abroad” it’ makes it easier. Nelson

  3. Hi Kathy,
Sad news about Silver Airways. They always came through on time for me. They had beautiful new planes as well. Hoping their employees find new jobs soon. Bahamas Air flying into Fort Lauderdale will be a dream. Going through Customs in FLL is a breeze compared to Miami’s Customs nightmare!!! I dropped Dan and Larry at the airport so very early this morning at 0400 and they’ll be home before noon. It was great to see them stateside. Thanks for the airline updates and all you do with the blog to keep us informed. It’s much appreciated. And of course best wishes to Bob.

I had 6 different flight reservations on Silver for this month and July and boy did I have to scramble. Coming into FLL from LAX and spending one night there before the jump to the island., I didn’t have many choices if I didn’t want to change a lot of logistics for a large group coming and leaving at different times. Had to go private flight charters out of FLL. I really hope AA adds a good amount of flights into Governor’s. 🙂 Thanks for writing this article.
