Yes dear readers – it is quieter and quieter here in Eleuthera. The only places open for eating out in Governors Harbour are 1648 – French Leave Resort , and Sunset Inn. So you had better check out what you have in your freezer and rustle something up yourself !

Bob and I went on a date night on Friday to 1648 – and there were a few people there. The great news is that they are staying open throughout the next couple of months – yippee ! No closing down at all – but they will only be open for dinner. No breakfast or lunch. But we can live with that – right ?

Date night at 1648

Anyway we shared a pizza – I know – last of the big spenders ! And they very kindly agreed to let us have it half and half with two separate toppings. Very obliging – but to buy two separate ones would be such a waste as neither of us eats more than a half – Bob sometimes less than half. Anyway I had the mushroom and truffle oil and Bob had shrimp and sausage. That wasn’t even on the list of pizzas – but like I say – they were very obliging ! It made a nice end to the week and gave me a rest from trying to dream up something different to cook .

There was a great sunset there as well…..

The food stores have cut right back on what they are bringing in and I have to say that I don’t always feel like driving down to Rock Sound to the Market Place – although it is always worth it because they are still bringing in plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Anyway – maybe time to get out the recipe books and look for some inspiration……

On our next trip to Florida I will definitely stock up on some good cheeses and a few other permitted items !!

The beach is mostly deserted which is great with the dogs. Of course we miss talking to people we meet on the beach but not having to run out of the water and grab the dogs when we see someone approaching is a treat …… They are not aggressive but 2 black dogs racing towards you can be disconcerting to say the least. Rudge was so naughty when he was young – he would round people up and literally run circles around them absolutely completely ignoring me as I tried to get hold of him which was very embarrassing . When I look back now I realize how much he has matured – thank goodness……

Who could ever tire of this beach ?

And dear Brian has become a wonderful cat. She is mad about ice cream and somehow senses – even when we think that she is asleep – when I serve Bob a bowl of it in the evening. First she goes and sits as close to him as she can get and then she laps up the every last dreg when he has finished and leaves the bowl clean. She still comes on walks when I take Rudge out and is a delightful sight to see following mostly but occasionally skipping off in front of us.

Rudge looking particularly good – not that I am biased in any way …..

The rhythm of life is slower and more peaceful at this time of year – well we hope and pray that it is and that no major storms – I’m not saying the H word – come our way.

Any good book referrals will be welcomed – I am re-reading some older favorites at the moment. Ones that I know I missed a lot of the detail in my haste to get through  – so please let me know what you have enjoyed. What I am looking for really is something inspiring and uplifting – any suggestions ?

Take care dear friends, have a good weekend and remember those who are having particularly challenging times – health problems, financial or family – we all know people going through particularly tough times. Reach out and let them know that you are thinking of them with love…… A kind word can mean a lot.

I loved this picture from 10 years ago. We were in Provence celebrating Sami’s 50th birthday – so much has happened in those 10 years ….. And yes we really had a wonderful time all together.

  1. I second Molly’s sentiment. I love your stories about Rudge and Brian! Other creatures fill our lives with joy. Last evening l video taped 16 wild turkey foraging out back where 3 (yes 3!) white squirrels among others and sundry birds gather to eat seed after l whistle to call them. Even the rabbits are only a few feet away when l toss seed. It’s like a miracle to know them and they me. I’m currently reading Bill Toone’s (Fellow Royal Geographic Society & internationally recognized conservation biologist) “On the Wings of the Condor.” Kasha Toone, his niece and my close friend, gifted it to me on my birthday. It’s inspirational for sure.

Yes – it is true – enjoying the quiet time is important ….. We are off to Florida a week on Saturday for a few days – lovely to be able to walk into restaurants without a booking ! Enjoy your time in Florida. Lovely to hear from you …..

  3. Thanks for the lovely visuals in your Blog.
Two books that were recommended to me to read are Alan Doyle’s ‘A Newfoundlander in Canada’, and Bono’s Surrender 40 Songs, One Story.
Will be keeping Eleuthera and all the peoples in our prayers for a quiet and safe next couple months.
    Warmest Regards.

  4. Greetings:
There was a spectacular photo of a sweeping roof that appeared to be constructed of thatch at the start of one of your passed newsletters.
    Where is it ?
Thanks for your efforts to help us all to appreciate Eleuthera ever more.
