1. Here we are in Eleuthera hoping to dodge Hurricane Milton which is heading for the west coast of Florida. It is not heading our way at the moment but we know all too well that these storms can be unpredictable and do change course sometimes.

Hurricane Dorian was heading straight for Eleuthera in 2019 but changed course during the night thankfully missing us but devastating Abaco and Grand Bahama. So it is the price we pay for living here that we worry about these terrible hurricanes and the devastation they wreak.

The west coast of Florida was hit only 2 weeks ago with Hurricane Helene – it is particularly cruel that they will get hit again whilst still trying to recover from all the flooding etc .

I have just finished reading a great little book – called A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. It is non fiction – about him walking the Appalachian Trail – it is funny at times, full of interesting information about the Trail and a very enjoyable read. It was also very poignant because as I was finishing reading it I was also reading in the US press that a lot of the trail is now impassable because of flooding and damage from Hurricane Helene and it will be quite some time before people can walk the length of the trail again ……..

On a brighter note I took some pictures of some beautiful work on a new wall for the entrance to South Beach Villas on French Leave Beach.  It is lovely to see such craftsmanship being created. Lovely detailing ……

This will be where the name goes …..

Bob and I had a lunch on Sunday at Potlatch – great that it is up and open again. The staff were telling us that they already have several weddings booked and I know they will be getting plenty more . It is a beautiful location and everything about the resort is done to an excellent standard. Over the next week or 2 I am hoping to find out more about their spa – very much looking forward to that !

Bob’s wagyu burger which he really enjoyed….

Over the last couple of months I have had the recurring tingling on my tongue that I first got when I had ciguatera poisoning in October 2018 – six years ago !! It has been a long time since I experienced it but it is apparent that it must lurk in your system for a very long time.

Here is a link to the blog I wrote about it back in 2018 – https://bestofeleuthera.com/did-you-ever-hear-of-ciguatera/

I haven’t heard of any cases on island recently and keep your fingers crossed that we don’t in the future .

Okay – well that’s it for this week . Do stay safe wherever you are and watch out for all these crazy extreme weather conditions.

    1. Yes I love Bill Bryson.Love the part of Walk in the Woods about the bear! He used to live in Hanover,NH( home of Dartmouth College) and near where we used to live in Vermont. His book on England”Notes from a Small Island” is hilarious!

  1. Oh man…. Bill Bryson is one of a kind! I am not keen on reading nonfiction, but make an exception for him and Richard Preston.
Just finished “In a Sunburned Country” last night without power!!!
Thououghly enjoyed “ The Mother Tongue” and “A Really Short History of Nearly Everything.” Considering “When Things Go Wrong: Diseases: from The Body” because there are TWO colons in the title!
As for the wicked turn of the weater in Florida and North Carolina… sending hope to those we love.

Lovely to hear from you and thanks for all the recommendations – always very welcome. The weather has been so cruel to those in Florida and N Carolina – as you say – sending hope …..

We have both had a flu type virus – Bob has had it much worse than me – but as you get older it takes so much longer to recover from these things – damn nuisance ! Hope that all is well with you – lots of rain and wind over there ? Thank goodness you missed the worst of it xxx
