Just a couple of updates for you this week – about the foodstore and our garage sale……
Firstly the foodstore – Eleuthera Markets in downtown Governors Harbour. It has been a rip-roaring success and people from all over the island have flocked here to shop the great selection. Of course there are a few gaps in in what is being stocked at the moment – no frozen fish or more importantly shrimp and no frozen peas ! – The staff and management have said that they will be getting more products in over the next couple of weeks but the fruit and vegetable selection remains an absolute joy !
To be able to buy fresh premium quality raspberries is an absolute joy for me. My favorite breakfast – greek yogurt with granola – which they are stocking my favorite brand of in the market – with grapes and fresh raspberries sets me off in a good mood at the start of the day….. But the whole selection, as I say, of fresh produce of such good quality is an ongoing delight.
Prices are really pretty good – as I said last week – some items are pricy but a lot are extremely reasonable – and there is no need to travel up and down the island to find what you want.

Now the garage sale – oh my goodness – Jane and I were exhausted by Saturday afternoon – but we shifted a whole lot of stuff. Another man’s treasure was the phrase of the day. And it was such fun as well. Of course it helped no end that we have an AC unit in the garage – so we kept nice and comfortable rather than boiling in the sun.
I hadn’t spread the word too widely – mainly people I had told personally and of course I did write about it on last week’s blog so the number of people was very manageable. In the past we used to do flea markets down in Governors Harbour and people would be swarming over things while you were trying to set up – I’m sure that many of you have had that experience !

Anyway – a good time was had by all and Jane and I recovered after a couple of cold beers and a decent night’s sleep. The garage is a whole lot clearer and I love that things that are no longer of use to us can go on to have a new phase of life with someone else …..
We rewarded ourselves with a great lunch on Sunday at The Potlatch Club. As always the food was delicious and the setting is such a joy. As the weather has warmed up considerably the doors were closed and the AC was on – not too cold at all – just a comfortable temperature. We spend the day relaxing and recovering from the the build up to the garage sale as well as the actual sale itself.

On Thursday evening we had a great evening with Dan and Larry down on Cupid’s Cay. We started with fried pressed tofu which was delicious and went down very well. Then there was steak for everyone else and chicken for me served with potatoes, couscous and salad. It was absolutely terrific and I haven’t seen Bob eat so much steak in a very long time. Desert was one of Dan’s delicious cakes with ice cream – such a lovely evening – relaxing and fun with good friends – as you know one of my favorite ways to spend an evening.

On Tuesday this week there was a bad bush fire on the banks road – on the ocean side before you get to La Bougainvillea. The fire trucks did a good job and it was hours before the fire was under control. We have had so very little rain that everything is as dry as it can be and the danger of bush fires is a very real threat here.
We can only wonder at the horror that the fires in California earlier in the year have caused. Do please be careful here as we have limited resources to deal with fires like this.
I will be blogging soon about the drive to raise funds to able to build a fire station here in Governors Harbour. It is a going to be a big task to get the fire station built along with the community hurricane shelter which is a part of it – so get ready !
