A Trip to Nassau and Discovering Kyma

This week we are in Nassau on a short trip and we have discovered Kyma – a fabulous Greek style restaurant. We flew to Nassau on Tuesday with Cassius , Bob’s son and checked in to the Island House Hotel. As you know we are big fans of this hotel and Cassius stayed here for one night last week when he arrived. He also fell in love with it.

The only drawback this time is that Mahogany House – the restaurant at Island House is closed as is the coffee shop – so we have to go further afield to eat. Shima, their Asian style restaurant is open but obviously we don’t want to eat there all the time. Fortunately for us Angelika Bacchus of BFF gave me the heads up about Kyma – a Greek and Latin fusion restaurant pretty close by the airport and Island House.

So off the three of us went. I had studied the menu on-line – surprised to hear that or not ?? so when we went in I spoke with our waiter and told him that Bob could not sit comfortably for long and we would appreciate as quick a service as was possible. Then I ordered a bowl of fried calamari to share while we chose from the menu.

The drinks came followed almost immediately by our calamari – and readers it was delicious. Very tender but a lovely crispy coating to it and 2 dipping sauces – spicy mango and marinara. While we were diving into this we picked several other dishes – all to share and ordered them. I asked the waiter to bring them as they were ready rather than waiting for them all to come together. What a delight it all was.

As an aside – but believe me there is a reason I am telling you this – one of my favorite follows on Instagram is called @iseefacesinthestrangestplaces. Well as we were finishing off the calamari – there was a great example of what people send in to them , although I don’t recall seeing one with food in it. Cassius persuaded me to post the picture on Instagram – my fist post since Jan 2nd 2020 – and here it is.

I had decided to stop posting on Instagram because I felt like I really wanted to take a break from it. I write about what is happening here on the blog and although I love following other people on Instagram I felt that it gave this illusion of only the best moments of our lives. And goodness knows that during the last 20 months or so we have all had some pretty tough times. Not really explaining myself very eloquently or elegantly but it was a gut feeling that I didn’t want to do it for a while.

Anyway – the response was heartwarming and fun – but I hate that feeling of being hooked in to see how many people have liked what you post – checking and re-checking…….

But getting back to Kyma. We really enjoyed our selection of food and our waiter Ronell was charming. He was Bahamian but Bob asked him if he had ever been to Greece. When he said no – Bob said that the restaurant should have a competition for the best and most popular waiter and then send them off to visit Greece !

The lovely young woman – Annamaria Diamantis – who is the owner was possibly slightly less keen on the idea but it lead us into a great conversation with her. Clearly the Greek heritage is there – just look at her name ! – and she told us that her grandfather came to the Bahamas to work in sponge fishing. In fact he started the sponge fishing industry in Long Island and developed it for many years until the fungal disease wiped out a lot of the sponges. Plus of courses cheap synthetic sponges became incredibly popular. Nowadays the demand for natural sponges is revived and the sponge harvesting industry seems to be on the rise again. It was a really pleasant evening – great food and interesting conversation. We wish Kyma lots of success and will definitely be visiting it again ourselves. It was a real treat to put on nice clothes and actually go out – we have missed it a great deal.

Cassius takes great photos and is a dab hand at shall we say enhancing them so it was with great delight that we let him take pictures of us together before we went out – and delighted with the results ….. Thanks so much Cass …..

Next week we are taking a trip to Fort Lauderdale, dentists, dermatologists , podiatrists – all maintenance work that has gone by the board in the last 20 months. Oh and there may be a little bit of eating involved as well ….. Take care , be kind and stay safe.
