Bob’s Birthday and Mariposa Pedicures

This week it was Bob’s birthday on the 29th September and we had Mariposa Pedicures on the 28th to prepare ! Cleomie Rankine is from Savannah Sound and Mariposa Mobile Spa is her business. She has been giving us pedicures in our own home for many years. I highly recommend her – she has a firm but gentle touch and has a wonderful knack of giving you just what you want. Plus her pedicures seem to last brilliantly. She has been working as a therapist on the island for 13 years so there are few places she doesn’t know and her experience is apparent in everything she does.

At the moment Bob is just having an abbreviated pedicure as he cannot sit comfortably for too long – so a soak and nail cutting plus cuticles pushed back is the extent of his treatment – but I have the the full works with polish as well. We love the fact that Cleomie comes to us – it is so relaxing when you know that you don’t have to venture out afterwards.

Cleomie does manicures, pedicures , facials and is well known for her fabulous massages. She is kept very busy giving massages to visitors renting homes here but she also is called on to give massages to people who come on large boats and want to have treatments. Incidentally she does physiotherapy as well.

Another one of her regular customers is my Mum – Mary – she has a regular pedicure every 5 weeks without fail.

The island is quietening down – September and October are always the quietest months. Tippy’s and The Buccaneer are closed , 1648 is still open at the moment – not quite sure what is happening in the coming weeks with them and Sunset Inn will be open for a little while longer.

Of course Bacchus Fine Foods is thankfully still open Monday to Friday and we have enjoyed some lovely lunches there including Bob’s birthday lunch. One of my new favorites is Crab Cakes Benedict. Absolutely delicious – although I did discover that there is in fact such a thing as too much hollandaise sauce. The other day I asked for extra and realized that in fact they put exactly enough on the top ! Spent the afternoon sucking Tums which was a shame ……

Bob’s birthday was pretty subdued this year as you can imagine – despite renovated and newly pedicured feet there was no dancing. But it will certainly be a birthday that is remembered. One of the many things that my Mum and Dad instilled in us throughout our childhood was the joy of celebrating a birthday no matter how old, young or in between you are. There is joy in being made to feel that you are honored and celebrated just for being around. Fortunately as a result none of us feels dismayed or uncomfortable as another year is acknowledged. If you have children yourself try to impart that feeling to them.

Jane left to go back to the UK last Monday – the 27th – and it has been such a treat to have her here for another 2 weeks. It gave me time to catch my breath – of course I was physically and emotionally shattered after Bob’s operation as I expected to be and having her around was a wonderful gift.

Bob continues to improve slowly and steadily but it will be a long process as I keep on telling everyone.

Sprawling Towers is moving on but a lot of work is being done with the ceiling joists at the moment so not a lot of exciting new stuff to show you at the moment. But enough to keep us very happy as we notice all the small details ….
